I am....a CREOLE.. a poem I wrote

I am a Fontenot
A Jolivette
A Guidry
A Native plant
I am a river
A swamp
A crab
A shrimp
I am mardi gras
I am Fleur de Lys
I am a dancing lover
No,
I am not a mulatto, not a cajun, not a spice
I am not allowed to check but one box
I am mixed
The rooster
Church pies
The cotton you picked from your grandfathers field
I am not for purchase, however
And
I am,
undeniably
A
Creole.

Flattered by rejection

I wanted to enclose an email I received from a top literary agent yesterday. Check it out below. Although they chose not to take on the project I'm not disappointed at all. It only takes 1 yes in this business. Thanks for reading....duces

Dear Mr. Jolivette:  Thank you for submitting your query for our consideration.  Étouffée sounds like a very interesting story.  I have decided to pass on this project, however, as we are unable to give it the attention it deserves at this time.  I wish you success in finding a suitable home for Étouffée.  Again, thank you for considering us. Best regards,  *********

My debut novel...does it read like the back of a book yet?

Etouffee is the unique view into the lives of a family traumatized by death and bound together by their love for food, music and each other. Set in the small town of Opelousas, Louisiana, in 1949, Etouffee tracks the Broussard family a year after the death of their matriarch, Joelle Broussard. Sassy 9 year old Rozina is assigned a summer project to write about what family means to her. Her father, Tilan is a highly respected Zydeco band leader who refuses to speak of his deceased wife to anyone. The Broussard's struggle to find common ground and a space to grow past their grief.
